Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 Notified: Major Step Towards “One Nation, One Time”

The Government of India has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, establishing Indian Standard Time (IST) as the legally recognised and traceable time reference for the country. The Rules, which come into force 180 days from publication on 29 August 2026, provide a framework for generation, maintenance and dissemination of IST through CSIR-NPL and a distributed network of five Regional Reference Standard Laboratories. This supports the 'One Nation, One Time' vision and ensures critical sectors including telecommunications, finance, power grids and government systems operate with synchronized time.
