- Recruitment is "by Selection" - primarily interview-based. Mere possession of the essential qualification does not entitle a candidate to be called for interview.
- Where the number of applications is large, UPSC may apply shortlisting criteria: Desirable Qualifications, higher educational qualification, higher/relevant experience, or by holding a Recruitment Test (RT).
- Minimum level of suitability in interview (out of 100 marks): UR - 50 marks, OBC - 45 marks, SC/ST/PH - 40 marks.
- Where a Recruitment Test (RT) precedes the interview, candidates must clear the minimum suitability level at both the RT and interview stages.
- Recruitment Test/Combined Recruitment Test (if held) will ordinarily be conducted at: Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Dispur (Guwahati), Jaipur, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Ranchi, and Visakhapatnam (for the Ladakh post: Leh, Kargil, Srinagar, and Delhi).
- Shortlisted candidates must send self-attested copies of documents/certificates as and when demanded by the Commission.
- Summoning for interview does not guarantee selection. Appointment orders are issued by the Government after final selection.
- UPSC may grant higher initial pay to candidates adjudged meritorious in the interview.
