Overview

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) recruits 12th-pass candidates for Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) and Data Entry Operator (DEO) posts across various central government ministries, departments, and offices. It is held annually and is one of SSC’s largest exams by number of applicants.

Eligibility

Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent examination from a recognised board. Some posts, such as DEO in specific departments, require Mathematics as a subject at the 12th

standard level — check the post-wise eligibility table in the notification. The general age limit is typically 18 to 27 years, with standard government relaxation on top: OBC +3 years, SC/ST +5 years, and further relaxation for PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates per applicable norms.

Selection Process

Tier I (screening, qualifying only) → Tier II (main examination, includes Computer Knowledge module) → Skill Test (DEO posts) / Typing Test (LDC/JSA posts) → Document Verification → Final merit list based on Tier II.

Exam Pattern

SSC CHSL is conducted in two tiers, both computer-based.

Tier I is an objective screening test covering English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness; Tier I marks are used only to shortlist candidates for Tier II and are not counted in the final merit.

Tier II is the main examination, covering Mathematics, Reasoning, English Language & Comprehension, General Awareness, and Computer Knowledge, followed by a Skill Test (typing speed) for DEO posts or a Typing Test for LDC/JSA posts.

Both objective tiers carry negative marking for wrong answers.

Syllabus

Quantitative Aptitude: arithmetic, percentage, ratio & proportion, averages, profit & loss, simple/compound interest, time-speed-distance, mensuration, and basic algebra & geometry.
General Intelligence: verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analogies, series, classification, and coding-decoding.
English Language: grammar, vocabulary, spotting errors, cloze test, and comprehension.
General Awareness: current affairs, static GK, and general science.
Computer Knowledge (Tier II): basic computer fundamentals, MS Office, and internet basics.

Salary & Career

LDC/JSA and DEO posts under SSC CHSL are generally placed around Pay Level 2 to Pay Level 4 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix, depending on the specific post and department. Confirm the exact pay level for your preferred post against the current notification.
