Overview

SSC MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) recruits candidates for Group C, non-technical support posts across central government ministries, departments, and offices, and is conducted alongside recruitment for Havaldar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). It requires only a Class 10 pass, making it accessible to a wide range of candidates.

Eligibility

Candidates must have passed Matriculation (Class 10) or an equivalent examination from a recognised board — a higher degree is not required and does not disadvantage MTS eligibility. The general age limit for MTS posts is typically 18 to 25 years; for Havaldar posts (CBIC & CBN) it is typically 18 to 27 years. Standard government age relaxation applies on top: OBC +3 years, SC/ST +5 years, and further relaxation for PwBD candidates and ex

servicemen per applicable norms. Havaldar posts additionally require candidates to meet specified physical standards (height, weight, chest measurement) — check the current notification for exact figures, which can differ by category and gender.

Selection Process

Computer-Based Test (single stage, two sessions) → Physical Efficiency Test / Physical Standard Test (Havaldar posts only) → Document Verification → Final merit list.

Exam Pattern

SSC MTS uses a single computer-based test (CBT) held in two sessions on the same day, covering numerical and mathematical ability, reasoning ability and problem solving, general awareness, and English language & comprehension.

Havaldar candidates additionally undergo a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST); MTS (non-Havaldar) posts do not have a physical test stage.

Syllabus

Numerical & Mathematical Ability: number systems, basic arithmetic operations, percentage, ratio & proportion, averages, simple interest, profit & loss, and basic mensuration.
Reasoning Ability & Problem Solving: analogies, similarities & differences, spatial visualisation, and basic logical reasoning.
General Awareness: current affairs and general knowledge appropriate to a 10th-standard level.
English Language: basic grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Salary & Career

SSC MTS posts are placed at Pay Level 1 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix (starting basic pay around ₹18,000/month before allowances); Havaldar posts are generally placed slightly higher. Actual in-hand pay includes Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and other applicable allowances on top of basic pay.
